Introduction
Despite the title of this document, the contingent arriving from Paraguay reached Rosario in two groups. The first came on board the “República” on 13 November 1873, a total of 96 persons. The second wave of 11 people, mainly men, arrived on 2 December.

In his report to the Comisión Central de Inmigración, Buenos Aires, dated 22 December 1873, P. L. Ramayo wrote: En vista de la suma pobreza en que venían, se procedió á implorar lá caridad pública, tanto por medio de los diarios de la localidad, como personalmente, para recolectar generos y ropas que sirvieran á cubrir sus deznudes. Los habitantes del Rosario, tanto nacionales como extranjeros, respondieron generosos á este llamado de la caridad, remitiendo con profusion grandes cantidades de generos y ropa hecha, para hombres, mujeres y niños, las que repartidas entre todos, tocaron á cada Inmigrante 9 ternos completos. Varios ciudadanos Ingléses constituídos en comision, recolectaron suscripciones de dinero dadas por personas de esta nacionalidad é hijos del país.

[In view of the poverty-stricken state in which they arrived, an appeal was made through the local newspapers, as well as to individuals, for a public collection of goods and clothing in order to meet their immediate needs. The citizens of Rosario, both Argentines and foreigners, responded generously to this call on their charity, providing a great quantity of goods and clothes for men, women and children. This shared among the recent arrivals, provided them each with nine changes of clothing. Various Englishmen, in forming a committee, raised a substantial sum as financial aid for those who had come from Britain.]

The report sent to Buenos Aires provides a lot of detail about the 107 ‘Lincolnshire Farmers’ who arrived from Paraguay at Rosario. The two tables below (no. 1, the arrivals on 13 November, and no. 2, those on 2 December 1873) provide the essential details. What has been here omitted are the details of where they were initially lodged, and the immediate support provided for them.

In noting their names on arrival, the immigration officials did not always capture the correct spelling, with the result that some of the names given below need to be interpreted. Others are too difficult to understand correctly. In an additional page, comments are added on some of them.
