Marriages celebrated at St John's Church, Buenos Aires, 1872 to 1887

In transcribing Marriage Register No. 3 and publishing it on the internet, some abbreviations have been made. Readers should assume that all the men and women to be married were unmarried and single, unless a letter (W) appears after the name (meaning widower or widow).

This marriage register gives details of the legal basis for authorising the wedding to take place. There were changing circumstances during the lifetime of this register. Between March 1872 and August 1876, the legal formula was as follows: [name of man] and [name of woman] 'were married, after Banns published in pursuance of authority from the President of the Supreme Court, in the ...', corresponding to Banns (1).

Between October 1876 and August 1882, the legal formula was: [name of man] and [name of woman] 'were married, after Banns published in pursuance of authority from the Judge of the Primary Court for Civil Causes, in the ...', corresponding to Banns (2).

From 1882 onwards, the formula changed again, as the entries in the tenth column below reveal.

The marriage ceremonies were all conducted in St John's Church, with the exception of two in Trinity Church, Lomas de Zamora. This was a new parish, but still being staffed by the clergy of St John's. Two other marriage services were conducted in St Andrew's Scots Church during June 1879 with the explanatory note:'The Church of St John being under repairs this marriage was solemnized in the Scotch Church'. One other wedding in 1879 was conducted in Belgrano 'after Banns published in pursuance of authority from the Judge of the Primary Court for Civil Causes in the house of the bride's father in Belgrano...'.
