Introduction
It is only with the completion of the work of transcription of the Concordia Church registers and the Salto Church and Fray Bentos records that it can be seen how much they complement each other.

These two Anglican churches, located in different South American nations, Argentina and Uruguay, and separated only by the international boundary, the River Uruguay, were the scene of many important family events, especially baptisms, marriages and burials.

So it has been an important step in the recovering the history of immigrants from Great Britain who settled in Entre Rios and the neighbouring Uruguayan provinces of Salto, Paysandú and Río Negro, to publish these records, making them more accessible to those interested in their family and community history.

St Thomas Church, Concordia
The following is a description of the archives. St Thomas Church, Concordia was built in about 1883 and was closed and sold in the late 1980s. The parish registers were closed and are deposited in the Argentine Diocesan Office, Buenos Aires. It has been possible to make a complete transcription of the records relating to the 19th century, and in some cases to a few years beyond.

Salto Anglican Church
The Salto parish records are still located in that town. With the kind consent of the late Bob Henly, it has been possible to publish here a transcription of a selection of the baptisms, being those particularly relating to the English-speaking community. For the purposes of these web pages, the transcription the baptisms has been divided into two sections, those entries relating to children born in Argentina, and those born in Uruguay and Brazil.

Marriages in Concordia
The record of marriages presented here is the transcription of a list found on a loose sheet of paper in the duplicate Concordia marriages register. This is an abstract, written approximately a hundred years ago, taken from the Salto register of marriages, being those people originating in Argentina. Hopefully the day will come when a full version of the marriages registered in the Salto Church of people from both countries will become available. Some of the details absent from this list can be gleaned from the lists of baptisms.

Marriages in Fray Bentos Anglican Church
This town, situated on the east bank of the River Uruguay, was for some years a mission station staffed by the South American Missionary Society, then based in London. Of the parish archives, the first marriage register (1872-92) is known to have survived. It may still be consulted at the Guildhall Library, City of London, ms 11,223 or by means of the microfilm 563014 of the Mormon Church. It appears that the baptismal register is still in Fray Bentos.
In this register, the first 4 entries were left blank. It may be presumed that the details became lost before writing them in. Then follows 25 entries, of which 6 were of couples living in Argentina, on the west bank of the river, and 15 living in Uruguay, east of the river.
The Salto and Fray Bentos parishes are now part of the Diócesis Anglicana de Uruguay.

Burials
The register of burials is limited to those recorded in the Concordia Church burials register. Details of burials in Salto are at present not available.

Other sources of data
A few baptisms of children belonging to families living in the North Eastern provinces of Argentina were conducted by the clergy in Buenos Aires. Details of these can be found in the transcribed registers of the Buenos Aires Anglican churches on this website. To find out about the activities of other churches, Presbyterian and Methodist for example, researchers at present will have to approach them directly.
