Return of the British trade within the Consulate of Buenos Ayres
during the Half Year ending the 31st December 1828

Shipping Returns for 1828    1829    1834     Back to Shipping News     British Settlers in Argentina home page

These are examples of annual returns of merchant shipping made to the Foreign Office in London by the British Consulate in Buenos Aires. The returns are to be found in a series of volumes F.O. 6 in The British Archives, Kew.

Most interesting are the details of the exports from Argentina in those days, ox and horse hides, horns, horsehair, animal skins, jerked beef, tallow and bones and mules. Also interesting is that these tables indicates the very considerable imbalance between the value of imports and exports.

In transcribing the tonnages of the vessels, the fractions of a ton, for example 16/94, have been rounded up or down to the nearest ton.
